Memories of the Real Helen Carswell – Beyond the Shadow of Alzheimer's
A Gift from Family and Friends - Compiled by Allan Carswell
~ Author Allan Carswell

Memories of the Real Helen Carswell – Beyond the Shadow of Alzheimer's is more than a book of individual recollections about an incredibly special woman, family, and legacy; it is also a beautiful story of love and hope. Woven throughout each page, we are encouraged to see past the dark times and focus on all the blessings in life instead. Memories of the Real Helen Carswell celebrates the little moments that can otherwise go unnoticed in our everyday journey. Family dinners. Baking with grandchildren. Storytelling. Fun times with friends. Laughter.

This lovely anthology follows the charming and nostalgic publication, Our Lingering Farewell – Allan and Helen Carswell, also written by Allan Carswell in honour of his wife, Helen, and their exceptional life together.

Helen has lived with Alzheimer's for over two decades and has been considered palliative since 2012. Time is more uncertain than ever, yet Helen remains quite comfortable with 24/7 care, receiving nourishment by hand, and otherwise sleeping peacefully.

These stories are in response to a thoughtful invitation from Allan to family and friends to help celebrate their wedding anniversary of sixty-four years and Helen's birthday in June. It was more than Allan could have imagined although inevitable and very fitting, especially given all the lives Helen has touched over the years. What a sweet and moving testament. We all should be so urged and heartened to do the same or similar with our own beloved family and friends.

There's also an extraordinary memory from Mars shared in this compilation. Helen and Allan, along with other members of the PHOENIX team, have their names engraved on an archival silicon mini DVD in the PHOENIX spacecraft on the surface of Mars. It is a permanent record of their participation in the story of space exploration through the company they founded and owned from 1974 to 2015, Optech Incorporated.
